look younger

After 40, things start to shift, and you start noticing these shifts under a microscope.

Your skin's not as bouncy, the skin on your neck doesn't bounce back as quickly as it once did, your energy levels have a mind of their own, your hair starts greying at the speed of light, your cheeks and your neck seem to want to blend into one, and you just want to wear loungewear all day because your other clothes just don't fit the same anymore!

We all know we're slowly aging, but why does it seem as if all these signs are coming all at once and almost overnight? And the thing is, the more we scrutinize ourselves, the more we pick up on all the little things that we never noticed before.

To be honest, aging terrifies me, but at the same time, I feel proud of my age and all the experiences and wisdom that come with aging, and I have learnt to accept it and welcome it, but at the same time, I also want to hold on to the youthfulness I once had. At least that's how I feel. What scares me about aging is not so much about losing youthfulness in how I look, but more about losing all the things my body could once do with ease.

My parents are over 70, and my dad, especially, is in his late 70s, but I know some 60-year-olds who look older than he does. What I do notice that makes him look so much younger than his age is not his skincare routine (lol, he literally doesn't have one!), but it's in the way he lives his life!

You see, there are things that we can do to look and feel younger without chasing some unrealistic ideal. You don't need expensive treatments or a 20-step skincare routine. And it's not about pretending to be 25 again.

There are realistic things that you can do to make yourself look younger, not only on the outside, but on the inside as well, because when you feel good, confident, strong, and happy, it shows.

20 Tips To Look Younger After 40

Yes, being able to grow older is a gift, but sometimes our skin, energy, or reflection in the mirror doesn't exactly give us the confidence we so need during this phase of our lives. But then again, we can choose to make certain changes to our lives to help us manage the changes that come with this gift.

From skincare to mindset shifts, these simple tips are easy to do, don't take a ton of time, and actually work. So, whether you're 40, 50, or beyond, this list is for you to try out.

Use Sunscreen Every Day, No Matter What

Sun damage is the fastest way to age your skin. And it happens even when it's cloudy or you're indoors in your beautiful sunlit home. Using a good broad-spectrum SPF30 or higher every morning is a good habit to keep. Just make it part of your morning skincare routine so you'll always have it on regardless of the weather. Just remember to reapply if you're outside a lot.

Drink More Water Than You Think You Need

Dehydrated skin looks dull and tired, and drinking water keeps it plump and helps your whole body run better. It's a small habit, but it makes a big difference in giving you healthy, glowing skin.

Aim for 6-8 glasses of water daily. If you find water boring, add lemon or cucumber slices to make your water more interesting. Carry a water bottle or a tumbler you love, like the BrüMate Era Tumbler. Whether we care to admit it or not, a cute water bottle or tumbler will always motivate you to drink more water.

Move Your Body Regularly

Exercise helps with everything, from your skin to your mood. It gets the blood flowing, builds strength, and just gives you a good feeling, so you feel lively and young in your body.

You don't need to run marathons. A 30-minute walk, dancing in your kitchen, yoga, or even a beginner YouTube workout will do just fine. The key is to move consistently!

Stand Tall, Always

Slouching can make you look older and more tired than you are. Standing tall not only makes you look slimmer, but it also gives off confidence and energy. Try to be mindful of how you sit and stand. It's an easy tweak that changes everything.

If it's hard to remember, try the Fit Geno Posture Corrector. It's comfy, hides under clothes, and gently keeps you aligned.

Smile and Laugh More

Smiling softens your face, brightens your face, and instantly makes you look youthful. Plus, smiling lifts your own spirits too. People are naturally drawn to happy energy, and it's the easiest way to look more refreshed.

Surround yourself with people who make you happy, watch a comedy, talk to children, and smile at a stranger.

And don't forget to take care of your teeth! Having healthy, white teeth can boost your confidence and make you smile wider. Just whitening your teeth can take years off! For an at-home whitening treatment, the Crest 3D Whitestrips are easy to use and whiten your teeth in just almost instantly!

Use a Good Moisturizer

Dry and dehydrated skin makes fine lines stand out. A good moisturizer smooths things out and keeps your face and body soft and supple, with a smoother appearance. It's a non-negotiable for looking younger.

Choose a moisturizer that fits your skin type and look for key ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Some moisturizers worth mentioning are the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer or the Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream. And if you're into K-beauty, you could try the Medicube Triple Collagen Cream.

Add Retinol to Your Night Routine (Slowly)

Retinol really is the gold standard when it comes to smoothing wrinkles and improving skin texture. It helps your skin renew itself faster, fading spots and boosting your collagen for fresher-looking skin.

Start with a low-strength version once a week to avoid irritation and see how your skin responds to it, and build up from there. The RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream is a solid choice to start with. It works while you sleep and eases you into retinol nicely. Just remember to use your sunscreen during that day, as retinol can make your skin extra sensitive to the sun.

Add Vitamin C to Your Morning Routine

Vitamin C is like a shot of sunshine for your skin. It tackles dullness, fades those annoying dark spots from too much sun, and gives your skin a bright, even glow. It's a mood booster when you see your face looking fresh. Plus, it protects your skin against daily pollution and stress, which can age your skin faster than you'd like it to.

Use a Vitamin C serum every morning before your sunscreen. A few drops of the TruSkin Vitamin C Serum every morning will do wonders for your skin in the long run.

Take Care of Your Hair

Dry, thinning hair can make you look older than you feel. Healthy hair, on the other hand, bounces and shines in the light, giving you that youthful look. It's not just about looks; having strong, healthy hair makes you feel good and boosts your confidence. Things like heat damage or harsh chemicals that we've put our hair through the years can, of course, will damage and weaken it, but it's not too late to turn things around.

Stick to a sulfate-free shampoo and condition regularly to lock in moisture. Deep treatments once a week help too, and protecting your hair from heat tools with a heat protectant will go a long way in keeping your hair looking healthy.

The K18 Leave-In Molecular Hair Mask is slightly on the pricey side, but with regular use, it is almost guaranteed to reverse dry and damaged hair for good.

Get Enough Sleep

Skimping on sleep is a one-way ticket to puffy eyes and tired-looking skin. When you rest well, your body repairs itself. It's like your skin gets a nightly reset to stay smooth, bright, and healthy, and less sagging and fewer dark circles. Sleep also keeps your energy levels up, so you're not dragging through the day.

Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep every day. A bedtime routine, like reading or a quick stretch, signals it's time to wind down, so if you're having difficulty getting to sleep, make an effort to create a bedtime routine that will help you relax and get ready for bed.

Eat Like Your Skin Depends On It

Because it does! And your diet shows up on your face, plain and simple. So load up on fruits, veggies, and lean proteins to feed your skin what it needs to glow and be healthy. Think berries for antioxidants, salmon for healthy fats, and greens for vitamins. Remember that too much sugar or processed junk won't make your skin happy, so ease up where you can.

Make a habit of making half of your plate colorful with spinach, carrots, beets, peppers, and whatever else fresh. Nuts and seeds are great snacks too. If you need extra support Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides is an easy way to sneak in extra skin support. It's tasteless and dissolves easily in your drinks or food, hot or cold. This particular collagen powder has made such a big difference in my skin, hair, and joints that were previously giving me trouble, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Add a Green Juice to Your Day

Green juice is a quick way to flood your body with all the nutrients that make your skin and body thrive. Green juice is loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, which help repair any skin damage and keep it glowing. Plus, it's hydrating and can cut down on puffiness.

You don't need any fancy equipment, just a blender will do. Blend up spinach, kale, cucumber, lemon, and some apples for sweetness. And if you don't have the time or energy to do it but still want to feed your body, the Amazing Grass Greens Blend Superfood would be a solid pick for convenience without skimping on all the necessary goodness your body needs.

I have tried both juicing myself and green powders, and let me tell you that you're missing out big time if you're not doing this!

Keep Your Eyebrows Full

All that overplucking ages ago didn't do any good, did it? Knowing what I know now, I wish I had never plucked my eyebrows, no matter how on-trend it was then! Trust me when I tell you to let your brows grow naturally. Overplucking or thinning eyebrows can age your face fast. Full, natural brows lift your eyes and give you a softer, younger look. They weren't joking when they said your eyebrows frame your face. They do frame your features without needing a ton of makeup.

But all is not lost, if your brows are sparse, as it does as we age, you can always fill in the gaps with an eyebrow pencil, and if you think it will help, a really good eyebrow serum, the RevitaBrow Advanced Eyebrow Conditioner, might be able to help regrow your eyebrows. Many have had success with it!

Go Light with Makeup

Piling on makeup can settle into fine lines and make you look older. A natural look, with fresh skin and a hint of color, keeps things youthful and effortless. The goal is to enhance, not hide. Dewy finishes beat heavy powders any day for that glowy vibe. And don't forget, less is more.

Focus on a light base, like tinted moisturizer, and add mascara or lip tint. L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion is a great option for natural, glowy, lightly sun-kissed skin as it’s part moisturizer, part glow-booster, giving you that “I woke up like this” radiance.

Exfoliate, but Don't Overdo It

Dead skin cells pile up and make your face look flat and rough. Exfoliating sweeps it away, so you’re left with smooth, bright, fresh skin. It also helps your other products sink in better, so you’re getting more bang for your buck.

Do it 2–3 times a week, max, to avoid irritation. A gentle chemical exfoliant is much better than harsh scrubs, and the Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is a great gentle exfoliant. It's just a product I use, and will never stop using because it's just that good!

Do What Makes You Happy

When you’re content and you enjoy life, it shows. When you’re happy, it shows—your eyes sparkle, your skin looks alive. Joy is a natural glow booster.

Doing things you love keeps stress low, and that alone can make you look younger. It’s not just fluff; joy relaxes your face and makes you glow in a way no cream can. Make time for what lights you up—gardening, dancing, or just chilling with friends. Even small moments count.

The Five Minute Journal is a great tool and a quick way to stay grateful for all the little and big joyous moments in your life. You jot down a few things each day, and it shifts your mindset to the positive. It’s simple but powerful.

Stay Mentally Sharp

A busy brain keeps you looking lively. Learning new things, reading, solving puzzles, or even picking up a new hobby helps keep your mind sharp and your spirit young. Curiosity keeps you youthful in every way.

When you’re learning or solving problems, you’ve got this energy that makes you seem younger. It’s like your mind’s sparkle shows in your face—alert eyes, quick smile. Plus, it’s fun to keep growing.

Just remember to keep it light and not stressful.

Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin

Confidence is pure magic. When you feel good in your skin, you stand taller, smile easier, and just radiate youth. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about liking who you are, quirks and all. That vibe draws people in and makes you glow.

Wear what feels like you, not what’s “supposed” to look good. Practice small acts of self-love, like saying no to stuff that drains you.

You don’t have to look like you did at 25—you just need to feel like you. Being confident in your own skin is the best secret to looking younger!

Dress in a Way That Makes You Feel Good

I don't agree with the 'dress your age' thing. I just don't!

It’s less about trends and more about what makes you feel great when you walk out the door. Stick to pieces that work for you—good jeans, a crisp shirt, or a flowy dress. Add a scarf or bold earrings for fun. If you're looking at changing your style, experiment with different styles and see how you feel in them. You don’t need to follow trends, just dress in a way that reflects who you are now.

Stress Less, Seriously!

Stress tightens your face, clouds your skin, affects your sleep, your overall health, and basically makes you look wiped out. Finding ways to relax, even for a few minutes, keeps you looking calm and fresh. It’s not about being zen 24/7, but taking time for little breaks makes a lot of difference.

Learn to spot your stress triggers and build habits that help you manage them.

Try a quick meditation app, a walk, or just breathing slowly and deeply for a few minutes, they work to relax you!

Looking younger after 40 is about small, smart choices that bring out your best. Sure, genetics gives you a starting point, and some get lucky with great skin or thick hair. But what really matters is how you feel on the inside. When you’re confident and happy, it comes through and shows all over your face.

Pick a couple of tips to try. Maybe sunscreen or drinking more water. Add a walk or some retinol later. It’s all about what works for you. Because when you feel good, you look younger—plain and simple.
