Why Workout at Home?
Especially if you're a busy, busy mom who can barely have time for herself but wants to schedule in a workout in your daily routine, working out at home comes with perks that make it easier to stay consistent.
Convenience
No travel time or childcare is needed. You can fit a workout in while the kids nap or before they wake up. You can basically schedule it whenever that is convenient to you depending on your daily schedule.
Flexibility
You can choose a routine that works not only for your schedule but also for your fitness level.
Cost-Effective
Gyms and paying for sessions can cost a pretty penny if you want to be consistent and if that's not something you want or can in invest in, then working out at home is totally free. The most that you'll be paying for is for some basic equipment and that's only if you want to add them to your exercise routine.
Comfort
You're in your own space, so there's literally no pressure to 'look the part'. You can wear whatever it is that you have without having to get a new workout outfit every now and then. Also, if there is a sudden need with your kids, you're literally right there.
The best thing is you can get your kids involved too!
It is a known fact that staying active helps with more than just fitness. It boosts your mood, reduces stress, and gives you the energy to keep up with your busy life. And if you can do it from the comfort of your own home, there is no excuse. Do it for you—your future self will thank you for it.
6 Beginner-Friendly Home Workouts for Moms
Below are six beginner-friendly home workouts led by inspiring YouTube instructors that I myself have tried, and loved. These routines are simple, effective, and easy to follow and they are perfect to kick-start your fitness journey.
Yoga
Yoga isn't just about stretching—it's an easy way to take care of both your body and mind at the same time. Yoga can be like a quick reset button after a busy day or if you're doing it at the start of the day, it can give you that feel-good feeling and positivity to start your day.
Yoga helps with posture and also for easing any muscle tension that we all suffer with sometimes. Whether you want to tone up or just feel more centered, yoga is a great place to start.
I have done Yoga with Adrienne's videos on and off for maybe ten years now and I cannot recommend her videos enough. She's not only gentle in her instructions but she never pressures you into getting the perfect posture—it's always about 'doing what feels good'.
This yoga session might be two years old but it's still as effective. It's gentle, great for any beginner, and will only take you 30 minutes. You'll feel so much better after!
If you want, you can also follow any of her 30-day challenges—they're great too, and definitely worth trying. You'll notice how different your body moves after 30 days compared to the day you first started the challenge.
Low-Impact Dance Cardio
If you prefer something with a bit more energy to wake all your senses up, a dance cardio workout would be a great idea.
This low-impact but highly energetic routine is perfect if you're looking for something that will be easy on joints but still effective. Low-impact means there's no jumping or any movements that may hurt your joints, especially your knees.
Grow with Jo's workouts are not only easy to follow but they are fun. She's a fun instructor and is very transparent in her own weight gain and weight loss journey. Her dance workouts are accompanied by great music that makes you forget you're even exercising.
It's a great way to lift your spirits while getting a good workout at home, and by the end of it, you'll be sweating! It's a great excuse to have a dance party every other day in your own living room!
Pilates
Pilates is all about slow, controlled movements. It helps make your core stronger, improves your posture, and keeps you flexible. It's also low impact, so it's gentle on your joints, but don't let that fool you—it's still super effective at working your muscles.
If you're a mom looking to tone and align your body better, you'll really enjoy this 20-minute beginner Pilates by Move with Nicole. This particular routine does challenge you but it's still comfortable and bearable.
She has countless videos available so you can always progress to the next level once you feel you have mastered the beginner level and want something more challenging.
Strength Training
If you're looking to build some muscle, tone your muscles, and build endurance, then strength training might be the one for you.
Strength training is all about using resistance to make your muscles stronger. This means you would need a pair of dumbbells, go as light as you can when you're just starting out, and then work your way up. If you don't have dumbbells lying around at home, you can even improvise by using whatever water bottles you have at home.
Strength training is not only great for toning your body, it improves bone health and boosts metabolism and you'll see changes in your weight too. For me personally, I like strength training because it makes me stronger for the things I have to do in my everyday life, like carrying groceries up three flights of stairs and doing all the other things that require at least some strength.
I absolutely love this duo, Juice and Toya—their videos have been a gift for me and I have noticed positive changes in my body following their workouts. I can't recommend them enough if you're looking at starting a strength-training routine.
High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
HIIT workouts are short bursts of high-energy exercises mixed with quick rest breaks. It's a fast and extremely effective way to burn calories and boost your endurance. HIIT also helps your heart stay healthy and keeps your metabolism revved up even after you're done.
If you literally only have 5 minutes then this HIIT workout is for you. Five minutes might seem like nothing at all, but I promise you that you'll be sweating and out of breath once your five minutes are up! It's great for busy moms who barely have any time but still want to fit in a quick routine, and see results.
This BowFlex five-minute HIIT routine is beginner-friendly, easy to follow, and very motivating. Since it's only five minutes, push yourself hard to make all of those minutes worth it.
Indoor Walking Workout
I think by now, we've all heard how beneficial walking is for your health. Walking is low-impact, helps burn calories, and can help boost your mood.
But if going for a walk outdoors is not an option for you or if you prefer just doing something from the comfort of your home, you have to check out Grow with Jo's walking workouts. She takes walking indoors to the next level by making it fun and motivating and she uses full-body movements as well so you do get a full-body workout.
It's perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to stay active without overthinking it, and it's a great way to get your steps in as well!
Home workouts are convenient and don't have to take up time. There are so many workout videos out there that are totally free for you to start your fitness journey even as a total beginner.
Just a few minutes a day can make you stronger, ease your stress, and help you feel great as well. These workout routines recommended are perfect as they are relatively easy and don't take up much of your time.
Remember that getting fit is a process and trying your best. Start small, pay attention to how you feel, and most importantly, have fun with it. Having fun whilst doing it keeps you consistent and consistency is key if you want to see the results from your workouts.
